In this article I ask the question do you do what you love or do you just do a job.
Tammy tells the story of saving her child’s life and now marketing a pool safety product.
The value I hope you get from watching it is an awareness of what matters to you and how to you wrap it into what you are doing now.
I think that I first became acutely aware of how work and value alignment was important for happiness back when I was 20 something.
I nearly burnt out working 60+ hours but the kicker was 3 call outs a week when I didn’t know when or why.
Couldn’t sleep as always waiting for the phone.
That flicked a switch in me and Steven Covey’s “7 habit of highly effective people” work was helpful.
These days they have a personal mission statement builder online at http://www.franklincovey.com/msb/
Hope this helps you.

Announcer: Balance Business Coaching. More time. More control. More
growth.
Anthony: Hi, Anthony here, and I want to ask you: Is safety a law to be
complied with, or is it a value that drives you? Meet Tammy who
is driven by her values.
Hi, Tammy. Could you tell me who are you when you’re not at
work?
Tammy: Well, let me think about that. I’m a busy mom and I’m a wife
too. A wonderful husband. I have three beautiful children. So
yes, that keeps me busy.
Anthony: Tammy, could you tell me a little bit about your business? Now
what’s the purpose of your business?
Tammy: The purpose of my business is to empower my clients to know
that they have the confidence to be able to carry out the skills
to save a life if required.
This is done through education, via my CPR and first aid
training. Already I know that my story is on the Queensland
Government Summer Safety Campaign, and that’s dramatically
reduced the amount of childhood drownings by a massive 50%.
Anthony: Right across Queensland?
Tammy: Yes.
Anthony: Congratulations, that’s fantastic. What is it that you love
about what you do?
Tammy: What I love about what I do is making sure that the feedback
that I get from my classes, from my clients to say they actually
have learned so much from my training.
Anthony: Could you tell me what your plans are for the next 12 months?
Tammy: I want to develop First Aid YUCAN2 so it becomes a brand that
everyone knows. I’m the Queensland Ambassador of an awesome
product, the PlayGuard product. I want to ensure that that’s in
all stores so that just about every family has access to those.
That could help prevent drownings and first aid incidents from
occurring.
I want to raise awareness for a lot of not-for-profit
organisations that we have, that I work with at the moment,
through TV advertising. I also want to ensure that the survival
kit that I have a joint partnership with is in just about every
home so that we can prepare people for the unexpected.
Anthony: Sound like you’ve got a very busy 12 months ahead?
Tammy: Oh, yes, very.
Anthony: Tammy, could you tell me what your best marketing tip has been?
Tammy: My best marketing tip, I think it’s becoming the expert in the
field, I guess, through my PR and through different marketing
strategies.
Anthony: Fantastic. Could you tell me about the best sale that you’ve
ever made?
Tammy: The best sale I ever made was just a cold call to one of my
biggest clients, Griffith University. I got the meeting, had the
meeting, just told them my story, put the emotion into how I
saved my son’s life, showed them about what I could offer their
students, and the rest is history.
Anthony: So what do you think really secured that sale for you? What was
it about that sale?
Tammy: The thing that secured that sale was my obvious passion to be
able to deliver my program to the students, empowering them to
also be able to have the confidence to save a life if they
needed, as well.
Anthony: Thank you. Tell me a little bit about your goals and what
drives you.
Tammy: Okay. My goals and what drives me. I really want to be able to
dramatically reduce the amount of not only childhood drownings
but first aid incidents in general. What drives me is the deep
appreciation that I have for how precious life is. I realise how
precious life is.
Anthony: Do you want to tell people a little bit about your story about
how you became so aware? What was the incident that actually
caused you to value that so strongly?
Tammy: I was moving to this home. I was unpacking boxes. My son went
missing for moments. I went searching. I couldn’t find him. I
located him in my swimming pool, fully clothed, including shoes
on and nappies. Fortunately, I was trained in CPR because that
particular day I had no home phone. My husband wasn’t here. No
one else was here. No one came to my screams.
So I had to actually lay my son down, perform CPR on him, and
thankfully I saved his life. At that moment, I realised just how
precious life was.
Anthony: I know you’ve got a very busy schedule. You’ve got lots of
public relations commitments. How do you keep yourself
organised? How do you keep yourself productive and manage
everything you need to do?
Tammy: To keep me productive and self-managed I prefer to actually
work where there are no distractions. So predominantly that is
when the kids are at school or outside school activities or
usually late at night when the kids are in bed.
Anthony: Tammy what would you like to say to the viewers out there?
Tammy: What I want to say to the viewers out there is this product
here, I’m the Queensland Ambassador of this product. This
product can save your life, your child’s life. It takes 18
seconds for someone to drown. We easily can be distracted, go to
the toilet, answer the phone, answer the front door. We’ve all
done it; 18 seconds is all it takes.
This here goes onto the child’s wrist. It’s locked onto the
child’s wrist. We have a monitor here. We put parameters in it.
If the child goes outside that zone, the buzzer will go off,
alerting you that something’s going on. If they have submerged
themselves into water, the alarm will also go off as well. So
this is going to help.
I’d also like to add to be prepared for the unexpected. We have
tornadoes, earthquakes, all that sort of thing happening around
the world. These things here can assist in that as well.
